Archaeological discoveries at two different sites in the city have established that the Chengdu region was inhabited over four thousand years ago, and was a major cultural hub. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the city was the center of Shu culture, making it a very prominent city. In the 4th century BC, the 9th king of the state of Shu moved his capital from nearby Pixian to the Chengdu’s current location. The Song dynasty records state that the emperor was inspired by a statement made by a previous emperor, with the emperor stating how the city would require “one year to become a settlement; two years to become a town; and three years to become a capital.” Following this statement, the emperor named the new city Cheng Du, which after being translated, literally means, “Become The Capital”.
